Solar Incentive Program

The Puerto Rico Department of Housing (PRDOH) has designed the Solar Incentive Program. The purpose of this Program is to incentivize eligible households to acquire a photovoltaic system with a storage battery or only a storage battery in the case of those applicants who already have a photovoltaic system in their homes, thus promoting the well-being of Puerto Rican citizens.

This program will promote energy resilience in households with an income between 0% and 200% of the Area Median Family Income (AMFI).

Puerto Rico Priority Climate Action Plan

Puerto Rico, under the administration of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER), received funding through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG). The main purpose of the grant, awarded on November 16, 2023, is to develop a plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other harmful air pollution. The PCAP represents a significant step forward for climate action and pollution reduction planning at the state level. Its key objectives include setting ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollutants, and other harmful pollutants; accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources and promoting energy efficiency across sectors; enhancing public transportation infrastructure, promoting electric vehicles, and incentivizing low-carbon transportation modes; implementing nature-based solutions such as afforestation, reforestation, and sustainable land management to enhance carbon sequestration and biodiversity; and promoting waste reduction, recycling, and circular economy principles to minimize pollution and resource consumption.

Puerto Rico Solar for All

Puerto Rico Office of Management and Budget will lead a coalition of four other partner organizations to deploy solar and storage systems that will provide financial and resiliency benefits to thousands of low-income and disadvantaged households. The program will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants, deliver benefits to low-income and disadvantaged communities, and mobilize financing and private capital to stimulate the deployment of additional projects. The program will also advance and support workforce development within the solar field and engage residents in program planning and implementation. Given the vulnerability and instability of Puerto Rico's power grid, a major emphasis will be increasing resiliency for delivering power during grid outages.

Puerto Rico gets $3M allocation to continue fighting climate change

The U.S. Department of the Interior announced a $3 million allocation from the Inflation Reduction Act to aid Puerto Rico in addressing climate change.

The funding is designated for two federal agencies to develop local initiatives.

The U.S. Geological Survey will receive $2,750,000 to help alleviate workforce capacity challenges and increase the climate expertise of Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER).

The allocation will support the development of the island’s climate workforce through training, fellowships and practicum opportunities for recent graduates, enabling DNER staff to pursue advanced degrees in climate adaptation.

Meanwhile, $250,000 will go to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to further the National Seed Strategy in Puerto Rico. The effort will fund seed collecting teams and seed production to ensure an adequate supply of native seeds for restoring ecosystems affected by fires, hurricanes, drought and other natural events.
