Act No. 119: Fiscal Year 2024 budget

Fiscal Year 2024 budget included $20 million to EGLE to improve air quality and clean up contamination in EJ communities and $1 million to EGLE to expand activities that reduce environmental impacts in EJ communities.

EGLE announces $20 million in investments to strengthen communities, improve public health, and safeguard our land, air, and water

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) announced 43 grants to community organizations, local governments, nonprofit organizations, Tribes, schools, and childcare centers for equity- and place-based grants that will improve public health, monitor pollution, clean up contamination, enhance indoor air quality for children, and more.

The grants, made possible by a $20 million investment in Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s bipartisan Fiscal Year 2024 budget, were awarded through the Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate (OEJPA) to improve public health and reduce environmental burdens in Michigan communities with Environmental Justice concerns.

MI Healthy Climate Plan 2023 Report

This report provides a snapshot of activities undertaken in 2023 by the Council on Climate Solutions and a brief summary of some of the key activities state government and stakeholders have taken across Michigan to support implementation of the MI Healthy Climate Plan. This report is not meant to be exhaustive, but rather illustrative of the many actions being taken across the state toward reaching a carbon neutral Michigan.

The MI Justice40 Accelerator is a 12-month cohort-based program for community-based organizations serving disadvantaged communities. Twenty-five participants joined a year-long cohort, starting in September 2024 and received $25,000 in unrestricted grant money to develop projects that bring investments into overburdened and underserved communities to reduce pollution, create jobs, and improve public health and quality of life.

Public Act 119 of 2023 required the Michigan Public Service Commission to develop the grant program, which provides a total of $21.3 million, of which $20.8 million had to be awarded to businesses, nonprofit organizations, local units of government and tribal governments to fund planning, developing, designing, acquiring or constructing renewable energy and electrification infrastructure projects in Michigan.

The grant program prioritized funding for infrastructure or planning projects that meet one or more of the Michigan Healthy Climate Plan goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition toward economy-wide carbon neutrality.
