CT DoAg Announces $1.475 Million in State Grants to Increase Long-Term Climate Resiliency in Production Agriculture

Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt announced that the Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CT DoAg) is awarding $1.475 million in state funding to farmers and non-profits involved in production agriculture to invest in long-term climate resiliency projects which will decrease vulnerability to extreme weather events through regenerative agricultural practices.

Connecticut Solar for All

Project SunBridge will reach low-income and disadvantaged community households across the state of Connecticut, with a priority focus on affordable housing units, to allow for greater access to residential solar, increased resilience and grid benefits, and investments in quality jobs and businesses. The program has the potential to reach thousands of additional households through Connecticut’s existing solar and storage programs, avoiding CO2 emissions and saving Connecticut residents on energy costs. Connecticut residents will benefit from financial assistance with increased incentives, more accessible loans, and low-cost capital for solar and storage, as well as technical assistance for clean energy workforce development and community engagement. This blend of financial and technical assistance will create a sustainable funding stream for low-income and disadvantaged communities households to participate in the green economy, which will last beyond the SFA funding years, attract private investment, and drive market transformation.

The Farmland Restoration, Climate Resiliency & Preparedness Grant (RRP) provides matching funds to Connecticut farmers, nonprofits and municipalities to support investments that increase the long term climate resiliency of farming operations and decrease farm vulnerability to extreme weather events. This will be implemented pursuant to a comprehensive Farmland Restoration and Climate Resiliency Plan (FRCR Plan) applicable to the agricultural producer’s entire farm. This program is different than the previously offered Farmland Restoration Grant with goals and priorities as outlined in this guidance.

Project SunBridge will reach thousands of households, with a priority focus on multi-family affordable housing units. The project is designed to overcome current barriers for low-income and disadvantaged communities to access solar and storage energy technologies through a combination of financial and technical assistance. Through greater access to distributed solar and storage installations, Project SunBridge aims to achieve a minimum household energy savings of 20% for all participants, and will further help Connecticut’s goal of a zero-carbon electric sector by 2040, as established by Public Act 22-5.

Substitute House Bill No. 6725: An Act Revising Certain Farming And Aquaculture Programs Of The Department Of Agriculture

To (1) fund the development of climate resiliency plans for farmers, (2) support small-scale aquaculture operations for shellfish, (3) reconstitute the Apple Marketing Board, (4) require direct-to-consumer egg producers to meet certain requirements for their eggs, (5) authorize alternate State Veterinarians, (6) revise the CT-Grown program, and (7) make other minor revisions to farming-related programs.
